A lot has happened and many moves have been made since my first post on this journey. Building profitable niche sites are so much fun and you learn new stuff all the time. It’s been 4 months since the last update and both traffic and earnings are going up and up. I will admit, things are going a little slower than I expected but still going up none the less. Building these sites are a real lesson in patience and persistence. In 2018 the game is also harder and competition can be relentless. Still, there is tons of money to be made in affiliate marketing if you can keep chipping away and not become discouraged.
In the introduction post to this case study I was making roughly $100 bucks/m through a single affiliate program. These commissions have remained consistent and have not grown much. To reach the next level I knew I had to generate more traffic and also diversify my income streams. It’s never a good idea to rely on a single source of income. I see many affiliate marketers placing all of their energy into Amazon Associates. Bad idea! Amazon has continued to show affiliates that they do not need them by lowering commissions and making it difficult to get accepted. There are many affiliate marketers who will lose 100% of their income if Amazon cuts their program. My strategy is to go into niches with a healthy supply of products and affiliate programs to promote. This way if one dies off I am still in business.
With this in mind I began scouring the internet for vendors with popular products in the niche and stumbled across some very lucrative opportunities. Once I had successfully joined these affiliate programs I began writing about the product, getting traffic, and making commissions.
I also created YouTube videos about the product and uploaded them to my channel. The YouTube channel has also grown significantly since the last update. Currently I have 1500+ subscribers and 218,000+ views across all my videos. Each time I upload a video I get views and traffic to my stuff. Everyday new subscribers come into the channel and a certain percentage visit my blog directly. In 2018 you cannot deny the power of getting in front of the camera. You’re doing yourself a great disservice by avoiding the camera, that I know for sure.
Email list and giveaways
Email is still the best way to make sales in my opinion. If someone gives you their email it means they trust you. They are letting you into their inbox. Email is a very private corner of someones personal online identity despite the whole world swimming in social media. People hoard their email like its their precious. When someone willingly gives you their email the trust is already there and they are more likely to buy the products you recommend. Email traffic is very good traffic and opens up another avenue of making affiliate sales. When I send emails I get sales.
So I started building my email list with Convert Kit and began funneling traffic into my squeeze page. I knew I could slowly build it up by placing a simple pop over box on the site but I knew this would be slow given the low amount of traffic. To really speed things up I started doing giveaways and making videos. People love giveaways and they’ll sign up if they think they have a chance to score some sweet loot. The thing is, your giveaways have to be legit. Don’t say you’re doing a giveaway and not deliver. So far I have given away all the products I said I would. If you don’t, people will get savvy and turn against you. Remember, the name of the game is trust.
You can check out my landing page to see how I am getting people onto the list.
Once a subscriber is on the email list I funnel them through a series of autoresponder emails designed to entice them to buy products in the niche. Cha ching. As subscribers build up my potential for making money grows. At anytime I can blast off an email to the entire list. The thing is, cultivating a good email list is like growing a garden – it takes time, patience, and skill. Most people who try email marketing either piss off their subscribers with blatant sales pitches or they bore them to tears with their poor writing style. You must develop email marketing skills at all costs.
Show me the loot
Well I suppose this is where the rubber meets the road. At the end of the day it’s all about those benjamins. Like I said, things are moving slower than I hoped but income and traffic has more than doubled since the last update 4 months ago. Below you will see both traffic and earnings for the month of February 2018.
Adding these earnings to the $100 bucks shown above I’m just shy of making $280 bucks for the month of February. We can subtract $50 bucks for the cost of Convert Kit and my VPS to see a net profit of $230. Honestly, the site practically runs itself and is functioning on auto pilot most of the time. I spend a couple hours a week writing new content and creating videos. For the little work I put into the site these days I am happy with these earnings. I am especially happy to make these earnings even if I am sleeping.
There is still no doubt in my mind that the site will easily break $500/m+ and probably clear $1000/m with a bit more effort and marketing on my part. The beauty of these niche sites is once you have them setup they bring in consistent income with little to no work.
I look forward to continuing this case study to show you guys what is possible. What you are seeing here is a no bullshit look at what it actually takes to build and run a successful affiliate site. There is a certain amount of hard work and dedication involved. I hate to burst the bubble of some peoples imagination but these are just the facts.
Thanks for reading and until next time.
