Years back I made my first online commission and got completely hooked on the make money online game. Since that first success I’ve been totally immersed in the MMO industry learning as much as possible. What I’ve come to realize is the industry as a whole is difficult to navigate and filled with bad advice. If you’re someone new to the online business world this is frustrating. The thing is, making money online is similar to making money offline.
People somehow think making money online is different than making money in the “real world.” Because of the anonymous nature of the internet people think they can make money without following the basic principles of business. This is a real disconnect preventing people from ever making any money online.
Let’s talk about some basics.
1.) The law of offers and value
Making money usually falls under 2 categories – products and services. To make money you need to have an in demand product or provide a service of some sort. The product or service must have some kind of value. People have to want what you have. As an affiliate marketer I provide value by recommending products other businesses own. Products that people want. As a writer I provide high quality content for blogs. The market has deemed these services as valuable and they are willing to pay real money. How much they pay you is a measure of how much value you bring to the table, and what they are willing to pay.
Online value can be anything from owning a high traffic site and placing ads, owning an email list where you recommend products, creating a YouTube channel and shooting product reviews, providing an online service, building web apps, designing Facebook ads, creating graphics, etc.
As a practical example you can look at my $500/m case study update. That’s a site where I recommend in demand products and receive affiliate commissions when people buy through my affiliate links. The site gets traffic from Google and YouTube and provides me with a steady stream of passive income.
This leads us into the second law…
2.) The law of traffic
To make money online you need traffic to your site just like a brick and mortar store needs foot traffic. A high traffic site in a profitable niche will make you a ton of money. A low traffic site in a profitable niche will make little money. You can pay for traffic with advertising or you can build organic traffic slowly over time. Organic traffic is any user who has been directed to your site through some type of search engine, or perhaps you have built a brand and people share your posts and visit your site directly.
I focus on organic traffic from sources like Google search and YouTube. Highly targeted organic traffic takes a while to build up but it’s the best traffic you can get. Day or night your site receives a steady flow of users who consume your content and buy the stuff you recommend. While you are sleeping or taking a dump the site is making bank. That’s MASSIVE.
3.) The law of content
Your content is the cornerstone of your business. The content you create in the form of blog posts, videos, pictures, podcasts, is how you generate traffic and gain interest from the market. Without a steady supply of good content people will quickly forget about you. You should ALWAYS be working on creating new content and make it your mission to create the best content you can for your brand and followers. Learn to write and learn to shoot videos. If you hate writing or you hate shooting videos perhaps making money online is not for you. That’s okay, this stuff is not for everybody.
4.) The law of audience
This is where I see most people fail. They will create a one-off affiliate site with below average content and expect to make money. They think they can get away with making money online and have nothing to do with people. They think they can remain anonymous and make money without engaging with the marketplace. In 2018 the days of creating anonymous affiliate sites are over. Sure, you might rank for a little while but what happens when Google drops you from the SERPS? How will people find you if not by the good graces of Google? As a smaller affiliate your audience and the people who follow you are the life blood of your online business. Even if you have a small audience it’s easy to make decent money because people trust you and your recommendations. These people will seek you out directly, successfully bypassing the big G.
5.) The law of starting and finishing
Start something and see it through to completion. Don’t have hosting for your site? Get it today. Haven’t written a post today? Write something. Shoot a video. Do it until you’re making money and don’t give up. That’s the secret sauce.
